Misha Glenny, in this TED talk, points out something. “Hire The Hackers!”. This is the conclusion of a twenty minutes remarkable speech. It seems if you hire the best hackers on the internet, you will succeed in terms of the Security of your companies. As Misha says the guys, who every day get arrested, should have a second chance to show their abilities, which are led by a strong Asperger syndrome.
In many cases, these “Hackers/Crackers” live in a very brutal social context that has faced many tragedies and problems. For this reason these minds are always influenced by the environment and they often apply what they have seen around them on computing. This is not a criminal mind, this is just a guy who hasn’t seen an alternative in his own world.
I completely agree with Misha when he underlines this fact. These guys could bring innovation and great ideas in new and old companies; because these are the guys who see further. Maybe, they don’t have a MIT/Stanford degree, but they are the best programmers in the world. Although this is pretty difficult to accomplish, the recruiting system should also focus on the underground and not just in the universities.
The Black Hat Hackers / Crackers see the world in a different way and in many cases tend to break the rules and walls they find in front of them. This is wrong, but it is also true that they can not be defined criminals. They are guys, looking for a second chance, who don’t really have a clear idea about how the world rules, because they suffer from autism and depression.
On the other hand White Hat Hackers are already in the companies we see every day. These guys are innovating the world day by day, but I don’t think they are enough. We also need the value that is hidden in the first group, because when you don’t have barriers and limits, you can understand in depth several different concepts such as Network Security.
This world and the next tech bubble will need the best minds in the world and no matter their background is, we must find them for technology, innovation and great ideas.
