Marc Andreessen is an american entrepreneur and investor. He’s famous for being the co-founder and general partner of one of the most important venture capital firms in Silicon Valley, Andreessen Horowitz. Further, he’s the co-founder of Mosaic, the first widely used web browser and Netscape Communications Corporation. His background counts also Opsware, a company which he sold to Netscape, and Ning.
Marc got a Bachelor in Computer Science from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, soon after that he moved to California, where he started Mosaic Communications Corporation, which later changed its name in Netscape Communications Corporation. What started as a small startup got later involved in the Browser Wars against Microsoft and its Internet Explorer alternative. The company was then sold to AOL for $4.2 billion.
After the Netscape experience, Marc Andreessen left the company to found Loudcloud, a service based web hosting company, with Ben Horowitz and two other co-founders. The company went through an IPO in 2001, in the middle of the dot com bubble and sold to Hewlett-Packard for $1.6 billion in 2007.
In 2009, after a long period of angel investing with his partner and friend Ben Horowitz, the two decided to start a Venture Capital firm. Nowadays, it’s one of the most acknowledged firm in the Valley with a portfolio that includes Facebook, Foursquare, GitHub, Pinterest and Twitter.
This is probably one of the most important collection of videos we have ever published, since this guy gets in the top five list of investors in the world. He has gone through several different IPOs from both the co-founder and the investor side and he has probably seen thousands of business models, since he started Mosaic. That’s why, if there is someone you should listen to, he’s the one.
