Philip Rosedale is an american entrepreneur. He’s famous for being the Founder and Creator of the virtual online world Second Life. Philip started his first company while he was in high school, showing an interest in creating things since a young age. In 1995 he created FreeVue, a video conferencing software, which was later acquired by RealNetworks.
He’s also the founder of Love Machine and Coffe & Power. At the moment Philip Rosedale is working on High Fidelity, which is a company headquartered in San Francisco, whose aim is to focus on a next generation virtual world. The company received almost $4M in venture funding in 2013; there are obviously a lot of expectations, given Philip’s past background. He was also an investor in Milk, the company founded by Kevin Rose, which was acquired by Google, and Sunglass.
The interesting bit about his background is that instead of being part of the dropout generation or having a business background, Philip holds a BS in Physics at the University of California in San Diego. Even though Physics might sound strange, it makes perfectly sense with what he has built in the past years, including Second Life. Philip Rosedale is one of those guy who follows his passion and it seems his great interest is to bring people on the internet. He’s completely aligned with our vision and we think he also believes that people are going to live on the internet at some point. Second Life was started without the technological tools that we have today, but just with a vision; with all the possibilities in terms of graphic and user interactions, we expect something great from the High Fidelity team.
“You can imagine New York City being kind of like a museum, still an incredibly cool place to go, but with no one working in those towers. You are going to [work] in a virtual world.”
