Tim Berners-Lee is a british Computer Scientist, known for having invented the World Wide Web. He’s currently the director of the World Wide Web Consortium and he’s also the founder of the World Wide Web Foundation. Further he holds a position as a senior researcher and holders of the Founder Chair at the MIT Computer Science and Artificial Intelligence Laboratory.
Born in southwest London in 1955, Tim Barners-Lee got a first class degree at the University of Oxford in Physics. After his graduation he started working as an engineer and then ended up as an independent contractor at CERN. In 1989, he started writing a proposal to join the massive amount of hypertext at CERN with the internet. Tim wrote the first internet web browser, called WorldWideWeb, which also functioned as an editor.
The first website was released online in 1991, which was a simple page, that you can still see, providing information about what the World Wide Web was. Later, in 1994, Tim Berners-Lee founded W3C, the World Wide Web Consortium, at MIT, whose aim was to work with other companies and organisations to develop web standards.
After having introduce the WWW, Tim Berners-Lee received several different awards, including the title of knight from Queen Elizabeth II and a place in the World Wide Web hall of fame. Tim is not an entrepreneur, he hasn’t created a billion dollar business and speculated on it. He has built a platform for humankind.
It’s remarkable to see what has been achieved in the past 25 years and how the internet has gone further. It could have been a way to make money, but instead, he built a way to connect more people and to let the creativity of millions of entrepreneurs flow.
