The Future As Seen In Films

This year 2014 is starting off with a bang; the many innovative technologies, console releases, and many more from last year the big question comes to mind? This is whether or not movies from years ago have predicted correctly the technology and situation we have in the coming years. The most famous films such as Back to the Future, Terminator, and 2012 have given us the easy answer of ‘no’ because some technology that is predicted realistically cannot be sold for commercial purposes. For example, flying cars are a stereotypical wish for anyone dreaming of the future however, many scientist have stated that though it is possible to created such technology in the era we live now it would be impractical due to the amount of air traffic these cars would cause.

Going back to the films that I’ve referred to; Terminator is set around 2029, though that is still a few years too early for us to determine the possibilities behind this all analysis point to instead a ‘maybe.’ According to an article in the New York Times our decade will see rapid advancement in artificial intelligence technology, we already see Japan producing a number of androids that have become more similar to humans as the years passed but unlike most conspiracy theorist I doubt there will be a robot uprising for the simple reason that films such as these have instilled caution for many people so though there will be improvement in this area of technology governments and pressure groups are likely to control this from getting to out of hand.

Next on our list is the infamous 2012, this was the year many people thought that the world was going to end either by the earth getting such into a black hole or maybe by meteorite again; either considering we are living in the year 2014 this is obviously untrue. This being said the New Year has indeed started with some new technology such as Kano or the Ninja sphere. Just to give you an idea the Ninja sphere for those who are unaware of it is something that gives a whole new way of living and I personally think will truly propel us into the future of living at home. Going back to my original topic though we are seeing some semblance of what these directors have predicted for us in the future especially concerning the topic of space travel.

For many people on Youtube who have created reaction videos there is one that shows the reaction of ‘elders’ to the landing of the mars rover. What struck me was the phrase used ‘we are living in the future’ and to many of us in the generation today disagrees. However, when we look back at the advancement made from World War 1 & 2 it simply isn’t a case of having the latest Iphone. It is the transition from carriages to cars to rockets, many people in our grandparent’s generation would not have believed that 3D films existed or that living on Mars is becoming a huge possibility.

Films have created a platform for us to achieve certain technological goals that in some cases have been accomplished years ago or have been concluded to be impractical. Some films have given us an idea that the future only holds a deserted waste land of disease and technology that has become a bit of a way to regulate the way in which continue into the future as seen with the research into renewable energy in order to save the environment in a butterfly effect our lives. From 3D to 4D films and virtual reality these films portraying the future tell us that we are indeed living in the future and it is only going to keep on advancing hopefully for our benefit.
