While the Valley is still struggling with the recent Instagram acquisition by Facebook, a company located in Mountain View has decided to be more social in order to create the real threat to Facebook. Yes, Google Plus has been massively updated, giving us a new design with new features.
The first version of Google Plus was just a try into the social networking world. Google was trying to experience what it feels to be a social media. Now the war is on. After acquiring the Milk team, lead by Kevin Rose, Google seems to be more powerful on the social side. In fact what we are wondering here is if the team which was recently acquired really contributed to this new design.
Milk or Not, Google has made another step toward the rise of another social network, which now has more than 170 million users. Although the numbers are pretty high, the users’ interactions are very low and the time spent on the site is almost three minutes per month. For this reason it was fundamental to update and renew what failed in just six months.
With this renewal Google’s aim is to keep the users on the site, enlarging the social experience thanks to cirles, games and pages. In fact the registered users are not important at all, given the fact that Google has more that 1 billion unique visitors per month, it is easy to get millions of people on the site. However what it is crucially important is the time spent on the site.
The more is the time the more the social network is engagable. The lack of time stands for an incredibly lack of social interactions, which make your social network less interesting. Even if I have more than fifty connections in my circles is pretty rare two find at least two concurrently online, because everyone is on Facebook sharing with 1B users.
What the valley should understand is that this is normal. A social network such as Google Plus needs to wait for its time. It is not easy to involve the internet users to migrate from Facebook to Google Plus. This problem is just the reflection of what happens when you try to access the Social Networking world. The market is saturated and it is not ready for another site.
The key to success is to improve this product, as they are doing it right now, and wait for a mistake from Palo Alto, which would oblige the users to migrate to Google Plus. Patience stands for reward and if you don’t have patience, you won’t win the war.
