Strategy at Apple has been dramatically changed and progress has slowed in the last few years. The current WWDC, Monday, June 2nd 2014, will be a big milestone in Apple’s history for many reasons, one is that Apple demands for some new innovations to keep alive in the future and retain the brand strength.
Since 2010, Apple has not launched anything “fantastic” for the consumer (not developer). The launch of the iPhone 4 was essentially the last true product that made us go “wow” for a period of time and that changed the structure of most modern day smartphones. 4 years later with no Steve Jobs, Apple has produced five more iPads, a few tweaks to Macbooks and a couple of Mac changes. Sadly nothing has been dramatic in the last four to five years, I say this as the iPad Air wasn’t something that was mind-blowingly good for the company that changed the way people think about a product (and yes, the iPad Mini was not an innovation).
Simple, Apple must produce something that leap-frogs all the current products and takes their current devices to a new level. Additionally tap into another line of products. If they don’t do this at this current WWDC, they will be in a very vulnerable position for the next 3/6 months. In my opinion, I actually want Apple to succeed but they haven’t been playing their cards very well for several years now and it makes me cross because they had the opportunity to continue market social dominance of the tablet industry, smartphone industry and more. In order for Apple to leap-frog other companies like Samsung, HTC and Sony they must announce the following at WWDC on June 2nd 2014 (this is opinion):
- iPhone 6/Air - A smartphone with a bigger screen, screaming speed and a new technology (3D, peripherals etc) with the same price as iPhone 5S - and that doesn’t look like the HTC One design
- iOS 8 - A new UI that is more personalized (more prediction based services), interactive (gestures) and intuitive
- OS X - A new UI for OS X - needs to meet visuals of iOS 8
- A new product in a new consumer market - TVs
Apple should be aiming to “wow” everyone at WWDC this year, as they need to gain back the steady decline of Apple users due to lack of innovation. Additionally Apple have been very poor with leaks of the products recently, there has been various leaked images across the web over the last few months all pointing towards the same common results - what is mentioned above. Apple seem to have lost ability to cap their information as Steve Job’s Apple had less leaks than this Apple.
This article may seem a little aggressive towards the average or super Apple fan but I used to be a massive Apple fan. Most of my products were Apple - from the iPod Touch to the iPod Shuffle to the iPod Nano, I loved Apple and the way Steve Jobs created a strong aura around the products he created. I just want there to be more hype about an Apple event for the non-Apple fan… I want fans of other companies to be scared of leap-frogging not scared that Apple will launch what Samsung and others already have.
So, I’ve had my little dig at Apple. All I want an innovation line of products with a great marketing strategy alongside a new consumer product. I am expecting some big things from Apple and I hope that they don’t disappoint and leap-frog the industry in order to push innovation and competition in the smartphone market again.
