Kim Dotcom, founder and CEO of MegaUpload, after what happened last January has decided to improve his presence on the web by starting to use social media virally. By setting up a Twitter and an Instagram account, the programmer, hacker, freedom fighter has started to post everything about him at any time of the day. His tweets cover several different topics from family pictures to strong political accusations.
Further he has set up a youtube account in which he publishes his recent songs. He sings, he dances and he wants Megaupload back. The man whose company has been shut down without any reason claims justice in a free and modern world. One of his recent songs is “Mr President”. In this song Kim wants justice, he wants his site back and he wants to fight for his own personal freedom.
In order to fund a movement to fight for Megaupload and have it back, Kim Dotcom has started campaigning from his own website, Kim.com. His aim is to gather thousands of freedom fighters in a movement. It seems he wants to recreate something like Occupy Wall Street in his own niche. Can he achieve it? Yes, he can probably gather a lot of people who want Megaupload back, but he will never succeed if the US government doesn’t decides that what has been done to one of the most popular site on the internet was not fair.
On the site, Kim Dotcom raises many concerns about internet freedom, which from his and our point of view is at risk. Further Kim Dotcom has launched a pool on his site. He is wondering if the Americans are going to vote for Barack Obama during the next presidential elections if Mega is not back by the first of November. It is a hard move and we don’t know if it is going to influence something, but certainly it is underlining an issue that is crucial for the existence of the web as we know it.
In the same way Kim explains in ten points how what happened to Megaupload was a public scandal. The point made by the US against Megaupload rests on several copyright infringements. For this reason, as we have already analyzed, Kim Dotcom’s house has been raided in January and Megaupload has been shut down without even a trial.
The video above shows us the absurdity and the inconceivability of the arrest. In order to stop a single man, the new zeland police under the pressure of the FBI has used an entire army to arrest a defenseless man. We believe justice must prevail, but we also believe that every man has equal rights. Kim Dotcom has not been considered a man with rights, but a terrorist, a person who every day threats our freedom and liberty.
This is not true and it will never be. Kim Dotcom was arrested for a political reason, on the internet, there are dozens of sites like Megaupload, that, as Mega was, are protected by the law. Megaupload is just a mere medium, which can be used in a good or bad way; if someone uploads copyrighted material it will be the users’fault and not Megaupload’s.
As a blogger and a former Free Software activist I can tell you that I want Megaupload back and I hope to have it by the first of November 2012.
