StoryApp, Sink or Swim

StoryApp has hit the app stores recently, with its creative idea of merging pictures together to create your very own story about your life. Based on the idea that we can share these stories with others online the app has a sentimental value related to it that I believe can find its place amongst the young adult market.

What the app does is that it allows someone to take pictures from their iPhone’s camera role and put it an almost slide show mode and later a person could record their voice to tell others their emotions, thoughts or ideas were linked to that photo before moving on to the next one. Hence, creating a story is like a picture book for children to read when they are younger except this time we are the protagonist.

StoryApp BuildStory StoryApp, Sink or SwimStoryApp however may need to make some minor adjustments to their app in order for it to truly become a success. This includes finding a niche market to operate in. Even though I believe it may find one with “young” adults, the competition is massive. Think about Story, the app released by Disney, which has got four stars on the App Store or even any other app that creates stories both on the App Store and Google Play.

Further, the amount of pictures that can be added to this ‘slide-show reel’ is limited to about five pictures, which is not exactly enough to be able to tell or develop a story. In addition, the recording time for each pictures is too short and one has to rush in order to get all that they have to say for one picture finished.

Next, although the app allows us to share our story online with people we do not know, it fails to allow us to share these stories with people who we would want to share our thoughts and experiences with, our family and friends. The app could evolve to create a space in its story chat that lets us group our family and friends and sent out a special and private story that we made for them.

Building upon that idea StoryApp should integrate itself into the market by carrying out a research as to what features it could add to the app by targeting teens, adults as this time of their lives are filled with events that are life-changing and so they need to be able to capture that moment and tell a story from it. This is the turnaround strategy they need in order to create a small community of people, who know each other, and share their lives’ moments.

StoryApp, developed by Adam & Luna, has a long way to succeed and get traction, but that’s what building things is about. With the idea that pivot is always what startups are about, the team behind the app should get as much feedback as possible from the users and iterate on the value the users provide. The key and the value they have is the design.

The first step to succeed is to have a beautiful and impactive design, which is what the users are expecting; however the competition is one of the most remarkable brands of the last years, that’s why they firstly need to find an identity and then move to the next big thing.
