Manchester is where we are based. We think it might be an interesting hub for startups in the next ten years, because every day we see new and interesting projects that come to the world and set their roots in this city. There are more than five Universities in Manchester and the main one, the University Of Manchester is where Computer Science was born, thanks to Alan Turing.

In less than a month, StudentHack, Europe’s largest student hackathon will take place in this wonderful environment. For more than 26 hours students will take part in an extremely intensive educational experience based on trash food, coffee, red bull and code. Programming is one of the most intrigue things the human being could have ever invented and hackathons are the perfect place to show your skills and what you can offer to your team.

The first batch of tickets was sold out for just 1£. We have got to say that it was an interesting experiment given the food, the drinks and all the expenses related to the hackathon; but in order to innovate in a city that hasn’t still felt what entrepreneurship really means, you need the guts to take the risk. StudentHack is also promoting two battles that we share.

The first is the use of Free Software (also called Open Source), which has been spreading all over the world since when Richard Stallman wrote the “Free Software Definition”. The ability to learn, share and contribute to a project are the basis of Free Software and this is what teaching Computer Science should be about. Promoting it in a student hackathon is the best way to let people see the true power of collaboration and creativity.

Further, the second battle that we truly share is the involvement of women in technology. That’s why tickets are free for females. Only 10% of the past year attendees were females and this is definitely something that could really help this year. Even though we don’t believe that women should have privileges in order to get involved in technology. What they should just have are equal opportunities compared to males.

The venue is the Manchester Metropolitan Business School and the event will take place on the 8th and 9th of February. The organisation is expecting approximately 200 hackers who will be working hard to get a gold or silver medal. There will be also a a set of other prizes given the dress, the type of hack and the way it made people laugh.

We have got a few promo codes for those who are willing to take part in this 26 hours challenge. You just need to use them while you are filling your ticket form.

We’ll be at StudentHack, looking at how the Manchester startup scene is growing. Stay tuned, you might see something coming out from young teens gathered to build the next big thing. Always remember that Mark Zuckerberg was only 19 years old when he founded Facebook.
