Temple Run, the game that has influenced our boring afternoons and unbusy days will be soon available on the Android Market. Yes, it is true TempleRun, yesterday, announced the release of the Android version on Twitter. As the tweet said the game would be available for all Android users on March 27.

This is a great milestone for Imangi Studios, the company that developed the game, because about 300 million users will be able to download the game on their Android devices. As the company said, they didn’t develop the app for Android but they chose to find an agreement with another company that would bring the product on Google’s platform. This could be the reason why they had to delay the release.

Temple Run, on the app store, has had over 36 million downloads, making it the “game app” of the moment. Further they didn’t develop it just for iPhone and iPod, but they decided to build the iPad version as well with the aim to increase the possible users.

However the remarkable thing is the business model they used. Instead of selling the app at a particular price, they decided to release it for free. They chose to use a different system of payment. The game is all based on two points: the score and the coins that you get. Through the coins you are able to buy gadgets such as another runner or a feature, so if you don’t get enough money during the game, you can easily buy them through the app. They practically sell Temple Run’s coins in four different packs:

  • 2,500
  • 25,000
  • 75,000
  • 200,000

This choice made TempleRun one of the most downloaded and engaging app on the store. Whereas most of us would have probably chosen to sell the app, they changed the common business model, adopting one that is becoming extremely important in social media games. It turned to be the best choice, considering the fact that they had millions of downloads.
