I guess that probably the 90% of you have already watched this movie, but today I want to talk about it in depth. This movie has had a great success because it tells the story of Facebook (in a good or bad way). However this simple movie didn’t just make us smile, but it showed us the world from a different point of view. It described the first steps of a startup, the first quarrels between cofounders and how to start small and become big.
Further it didn’t just describe, but it influenced us in an unusual way. For the first time, people, after watching the movie, thought about being an entrepreneur and about founding something. The way the movie is directed, the sounds, the images stand for a world made of visionaries.
This movie has changed and will influence the entrepreneurship world for the next decades; because just a simple and short inspiration can change people’s minds. Students have understood that everything is possible, if you want it. It is not a matter of “great minds”, but it is a matter of good and exclusive ideas with a bit of luck.
Who wouldn’t want to be a CEO under 30 ?
The first part of the movie is placed at Harvard, one of the best university in the country. There, a young student decided to try something new. With the aim to build an unified Facebook, he developed a software that seemed very useful for Harvard’s students but then moved to the world; making it an extremely important tool to keep in touch with friends, relatives and lovers.
In the second part of the movie there is what people are looking for, a new life in the valley. A place where you can find connections, people and a lot of fun. Although you can live the worst years of your life at the beginning, you could turn to be a winner at the end. No matter how many enemies you have, you will constantly look for the next steps and you will love doing it.
The key to success doesn’t belong to great minds, but to people that see needs in society. In this case Zuckerberg was able to understand that the Harvard Network needed an unified Facebook for the entire university. Many of you could say that every Harvard’s undergraduate knew it and I would agree, but then I would probably say that he used the second key to gain success:
He was the first.
Being first is extremely important in Entrepreneurship. If you are the second in a specific field, you will need to have the greatest idea ever in order to gain users and traffic. You can’t compete with another similar product that has been on the internet longer than you and has the same features as your product. In order to win the long run, you should have something more and really appealing.
The other two keys that the movie tells are Sean Parker and Dustin Moskovitz. Sean Parker has been fundamentally for what Facebook is today, because he had experience in what Silicon Valley meant. He was the first Facebook’s president and he practically knew the steps to become big; his interesting experience with Napster made him interact with the funding and the structure of a company. Although Dustin doesn’t have a key role in the play, in reality he was strongly important for Facebook.
He helped to spread the product to the other universities, he learnt programming and he supported the company until he left Facebook.
In conclusion, in order to fund a startup you need ideas and the easiest way to get them is to find inspiration. Further to gain success, as Facebook did, you don’t need just a great idea, but luck and strong people that will be able to help you in any situation.
In my personal experience, I just can say that this movie made me do things that I had never imagined before.
